RAAC Goes Outside!
We are partnering with the Canadian Adaptive Climbing Society and On The Rocks Guiding for a day of outdoor climbing at Metcalfe Rock, in the Blue Mountains area of Ontario, North of Faversham. The cliff (or “crag” in climber lingo) is approximately a 2 to 2.5 hour drive away from London.
This event is open to climbers ages 13+ of all experience levels, however, please know that outdoor climbing does present its own unique physical and evironmental challenges. To access the climbing area, there is a 1km walk with varied terrain, including over rocks and roots. Some sections are steep, and would be difficult to roll independently. Volunteers will be available to assist you, but comfort with hands-on help may be necessary.
There are no accessible washroom facilities with indoor plumbing at the cliff, but there is an accessible port-o-potty at the beginning of the trail in the parking lot. We will also make a pit stop first in a town with accessible facilties first (like a Tim Hortons or McDonalds.)
As with all outdoor activities, we ask that you please come prepared. What to bring:
Your own climbing gear (shoes, harness, helmet) if you already have it
2L of water, snacks, sunscreen, and bug repellant.
Long pants are highly reccommended if you have concerns about your legs being scraped or bruised. RAAC will bring knee pads.
comfortable closed toed running shoes or hiking boots.
There will be rides to Metcalfe available from The Junction, which will serve as the main pickup and drop off point. Currently we do not have access to an accessible vehicle, so participants will need to be able to transfer and sit in a regular car or SUV.
Participants are expected to get themselves to and from the gym via Para transit, ride apps, etc. just as they would on a normal RAAC climb night.
The cost of this event is $30. Payment details will be emailed separately.
We will be departing The Junction at 11:30am in the parking lot - please arrive at least 10-15 minutes early so we can arrange gear and mobility devices in the vehicles. We are aiming to arrive at the crag by 2pm.
